I was a patient on Ward 5 of the 93rd EVAC, 28JUL70 to 13AUG70. I am searching for the nurses who took care of me during my hospitalization so that I can thank them.
The nurses who signed my records were Lt. M. ( believed to be Mary) Reynolds, Capt. R. ( possibly Rita) Spencer, Lt. V. Gardiner, Lt. M. Stralka, and a Lt. Malbins.
With all the patients these ladies dealt with, they probably will not remember me, but I feel they may remember my 'case'. I was the early onset rabies patient who lived.
Thank you for this chance to continue my search for these ladies.

Vietnam Vet. '69-'70 CW3, 982A, Army Security Agency

A poem from then:

THE DISTANT CALL OF WAR

It is the grit and the grind of war that appalls
as with each dawn I awake with hesitation and caution.
For I know not what awaits my open eyes, the smolder of fire,
or the stench of roasted flesh and broken bone.
Maybe a beautiful blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds.

Or perhaps just the deadly silence afore the attack,
when all things cease to move,
even the wind withers just before the rush of the first mortar round.
Eyes go large round and the call rings out ? Incoming! ? get down!

Dirt, dust, smoke, the ringing sound of metal on metal
mixed with the greasy smell of water-proofing,
mildew, cordite, sweat, bug repellent, napalm, and fear.
Both yours and his.
Get that flack-jacket and steel pot on, enough time for the boots?
Hell yes, you may have to run.
And grab your weapon.
Go!

Fear is the part that makes you mad,
how dare some other little fellow impress it upon you.
You?ll shoot him if you can, or stick him if he?s close,
just to return the token of his fear back into him.

For such is the mind of a soldier in combat, it?s just
a part of the grit and grind of war.
It?s nothing new, nor anything to be proud of.

The scary part is that the next time around it feels
much more like a normal state of affairs, and so on
with the battle we go.

be nice to hear from someone at phu bai 66-67..3/3 motor t ...we made many trips up hwy 1 ...through dong ha ..camp carroll..quang tri...a lot of thoughts.. the day the bridge was blown up out side of hue..the sea bees put a temp bridge of pontoon boats together to make a bridge for the deuce and halves to cross...up we would go to the army 155 position by a shau valley..we would take loads of shells and brass/powder to them... to lob into to the valley..we didnt know it was of no use to do so...the nva headed down to hue anyway...we went into wall city for 1 hour one day..a short r&r ...we were told to take one mag/rifle..it was pretty secure at that time..the one thing i do remember was the large hole in the wall to rear of the city...the viet cong blew open the wall to make a attack one evening..we went on a lot of small operations around phu bai...the one i remember was golden flesse..it was a short run into the villages just around phu bai...to support the cac units assigned to the villages.. if they came under attack during the night..just some thoughts.. if you remember some of these drop me a line...welcome home..
