I was the last XO/PBO of the 24th Trans Co at Cam Ranh Bay. Just before the Army turned Cam Ranh over to the South Vietnamese, the 24th and a few other residual units were relocated to the former Navy compound on the bay side of the US Air Force Base at Cam Ranh. This was about 1 March 1972. Around 15 April, I took the property book/documents to Long Binh to have it cleared. Upon completion, I called back to Cam Ranh and left a message that the 24th was finally stood down. Cam Ranh Air Force Base was closed. Therefore I flew from Bien Hoa to Nha Trang and hitchhiked back to the Navy compound. There, under my door was a note from CPT Randall Peters. It said, " We got your message and caught the last plane out. Good Luck." I changed into jungle fatigues and reported to Co D/51st Inf, my new unit. I would serve with them until the end of June 1972. When I left this company, there were just a handfull of cadre left. The only other unit that I am aware of was a helicopter maintenance company.

The 24th Trans Co, under the 24th Trans Bn and part of the 124th Trans Cmd, I believe was the last long haul unit between Qui Nhon and Newport. By June 1972, the Army elements at Dalat, Phan Rang, Dong Ba Thin, and Tuy Hoa and the ROK White Horse Division at Ninh Hoa were completely gone. Only a Residual Support Activity was operating at Nha Trang.

My Step-Father who I think of a father more than my dad served in Vietnam. He doesn't talk much about it but I know it's difficult to talk about. I think Dan Melton my step-dad who is married to my mom Laura Melton is a brave man that is very smart. He is now an Avid out door person that loves to fish, hunt, and alot more. I hope some day he will teach me to be as good of person as he is.

Hey, Dad. just wanted to say some things to the people that are signing the guest book. i know that i am young at only 20 and in the Marines but with my experience with going to Vietnam it has changed my life and the lives of other that went with me. I really never knew the effects of war on the veterns till i went to Vietnam and saw how they acted facing there fears. Alot say i will never go back. So did my dad but look at were he is at know. Instead of hate he has love for the people. I believe that others with fears from the war should stand up and say this is the day i end those fears, and you can do it. All you need is a little faith. i have a whole new look on the veterins and mad respect for them and what they have done. I can only wope to return the favor. Thank You and Semper Fi

My mother and I started a Vietnam Scrabook for my dad last week. His name is Matthias Letson. He served in Vietnam from December 1970 to December 1971. As we were starting on the book he told me about a few of the men he was over there with. One of the men was Kyle Moon. My father and Kyle were best friends. The next night I was doing research on Vietnam to see if I could find other things for his scrapbook. While doing this I thought it would be great to find Kyle. I search for him and he was the second person I called. I believe the Lord wanted me to find Kyle and that is why it didn't take long to find him. He and my father are getting together this weekend. I am now extremely interested and excited about doing this scrapbook and hearing all their stories. I would like to find some of the other men that were with my father and Kyle in Vietnam. If you remember them or have heard anyone speak of either of them, please email me at Karebears1981@aol.com. Thanks!

I'm Vietnamese yet I don't know much about my history because I was very young when I left my country. Knowing what my people and country went through is heartbreaking. Thank you for providing the information that I can learn about my culture. Though I am only 12,I can understand all the things going on around the world...So once again thank you.
