I just got in on the tail end of V N in the early 70s (USN - US Morton DD-948). By far one of the best things that ever happened to me. When I first joined the Navy after high school, my father (an old WW2 Navy Vet) told me, ?You will loathe the decision and wish you were not in the Navy. But, years later you will be dam glad you did it.? He pretty much hit the nail on the head. Have used my experience with Nam, the Navy, and the times, to provide me fuel when needed though out my life and medical career. Charlie

I was just looking for some history when I found this site , and I am glad to hear that someone is helping the people in Vietnam ,I have always been a supporter of the war and have great respect for those who fought in it and gave thier live for it , I have recently come back from Vietnam and would tell people that have not been there to go it is a great place the people will treat you like family , I also found that a lot of thier soldiers suffer from the some of the same things ours do , they are a proud people with a great history to and when you see some of the things they used in the war such as traps you will think what kind of people are these to make such painful things but you will have to say that was then this is now it is much different ow . So to all of our guys in service then and now good work and I do not always say things right so I hope that I have not offended anyone.

I thank M.C. for making me aware of this "reconciliation" project between two groups of people who share so much suffering. It is the right thing to do in the face of the hurt generated. Will we eventually learn that pacifism is as active as warism and that in the process of discussion and dialogue principles of mutual respect and non-violence can build bridges. War should be reserved for critical cases only, like WWII. I believe that is the last war we fought that made any sense.

Medic 4th Batt. 23rd Inf. (Mech). Assigned to C Co. from Headquarters. Feb. '67 to Feb. '68. My memories of the year are resurfacing more and more because the current events in Irag reminds of the situation in Nam. Who is the enemy and who is not. Those who don't remember the past seem doomed to repeat it !

I was doing some homework for my sons that are currently in Baghdad, Iraq with B Co 1-152 Infantry. I was writting them a letter in order to explain that this talk about Operation Iraqi Freedom and Vietnam being the same, is absurd.
I was drafted Oct 3, 1968 and sent to Ft Polk, LA (Tigerland) for infantry training for Vietnam. In early 1969, when they were taking whole companies at midnight and shipping them over with no leave, my training company was broken up and sent everywhere in the world. I had a bond with my basic training buddies from Ft Knox and had to see them sent. Some never to return. This, plus the anti-war rheteric, made me want to know the truth. As third generation Army myself, I wanted to be in a position to advise my 3 sons later in life. Never in my wildest dreams did I think 2 of my sons would be awarded CIB's while serving one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. I am convinced that we are doing the right thing and if this was like Nam, I would be the first to say! This is not the army of the 60's and 70's.
Here's to anyone I served with at Ft Knox, Ft Polk, or with A Co 3rd/37th Armor, Erlangen, Germany!

I am the daughter of a Marine private who served in Nam for only three months when he was killed by sniper fire. I know he died in Feb. of 1968. About 6 months before I was born. I know little else except that he enlisted in the Marines in 1967 and went to Nam almost immediatly. He is buried here in Colorado where I live and where he is from, at Ft. Logan Cemetary. I have had a very big interest in finding out as much as I can about the conflict but what I hope to possibly find are people who were there with him or who may have served with him during training. His name is James Pirdeaux Jr. His father, James Pirdeaux Sr., was a Col. in the Army also but did not loose his life in Nam. I am a veteran of the Gulf War and served 8 years in the Army as a sgt. If anyone recognizes my fathers name or situation I would love to hear from you. I have only respect for anyone who has served their country no matter in what capacity. Both my father and I enlisted but I know many were drafted for Vietnam and still served proudly. Please take care of yourselves and your veterans. In Peace and Pride!
