Money as a state coinage is said to have originated in Lydia (an Iron Age kingdom located in the western region of modern Turkey) in the seventh century BCE. This enabled governments to issue coins whose nominal value exceeded their value as metals. Paper, as money, is very modern — only about 300 years old.

There is little doubt that money is perhaps the universally most interesting object to all of us. Money is a horror but what it can do is fantastic.
