I was station at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and then one day I recieved orders for a tour duty in the Republic of Vietnam. I reported at Cam Rahn Bay Replacement Center on 4 November 1970, then I was asigned to the 84th Combat Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Bragade. The 84th Engineer has a nick name of Lizaerd. I had a MOS of suppy, so I was asign to C Company of the 84th. As time went on, I was at the gate talking with the gate guard, when this 2 1/2 ton came up the gate and was going out the gate, when the Battalion Commander was in the area, came up and told this E-4 whom was driving the truck said his truck is deadline. The driver said why,and the reply he was told is that he has no lizards stenciled on his truck, and was ordered to go back to the motorpool and stencil his truck, the driver was highly mad about it.Mean while I was in my supply room, and I heard all this yelling out side in the motorpool and it was the driver and said if the battalion commander wants lizzards he will get lizards. He had lizards all over the truck The total lizards is 12 of them, he had lizards all over the canves, just one on the canves, and that is a 6 foot lizard, and that is it. Rest is history. One small thing, the 84th was under the 987 Group. Then, the word came out that the battalion is moving to DaNang, and be will be under the 95th group. The movement of the battalion went by ship, like the M-290's D-10 Bodozers , plus other heavy equipment. We drove all the to Danang, but before we got there we went in to this compound to take a all night break, Next morning we were on our way.We went through Melie, the place where all these people and kids were killed by Lt. Kelly, orders he had recieved by his company Commander Captain Madina, also a general whom was demoted one star, and Captain didn't recieved any thing. Lt. Kelly had a rough time of it. Then with the rest trip from going through Melie, we made it to Danang, also rest is history. Bye! Mr. Al Marsh a retired N.C.O.
