I served as an 0311 grunt squad leader of 2nd squad, 2nd platoon, ECHO CO. 2nd Btn. 1st Marines 67-68. I killed too many of their men to remember, and saw too many of our men killed and wounded to forget.
From DaNang to QuangTri to DongHa to ConThien,
Gunny Nathnial Webster and LCPL Larry Herfell were KIA at ConThien just after I was medevaced
out. I finished out my tour as chief draftsman for the G-3 Section at First Marine Division Headquarters DaNang. ECHO CO. took a beating at ConThien for 73 straight days under the artillery of the NVA, living like trapped rats in muddy bunkers and water-filled trenches. Our Btn. Commander LT. Col. Parker was wounded when a rocket hit inside the door of the command bunker. That place was as close to hell on earth as I ever could imagine, and I will never forget the brave Marines that fought and bled and died there that we all may sleep in peace here at home.
God Bless and Keep them all in his loving arms. Any of you old ECHO RAIDERS ground-pounders still alive out there?
