When you were in Bien Hoa in 1967 - 1968, I was there, too. I was seven - eight years old, a frightened little girl. I wrote the little book in part to honor my stepdad, an American GI, who was only 21 years old when he married my mother and adopted my siblings and me. I also wanted to honor you and all the veterans who served during the Vietnam War. You all, too, are my heroes. And lastly, I also hope the book would keep alive the memory of my Ba Noi, the gracious and graceful woman who raised me and whose approach to life has influenced me.

The net proceeds are donated to various organizations supporting our veterans and troops. It is my way of thanking you. What I did not anticipate and could not have imagined were veterans responding to my thank you with such openness and friendship, just as you did. You, veterans of the Vietnam War, and I shared a chapter in our world's history that forever bonds us. Our special kinship is more than just words. Our kinship is real, tangible and powerful.

I hope that you will tell other veterans about this little book, Beyond the Rice Paddies. It is my passion to make sure all veterans hear the little girl's voice so they don't wonder any more...make sure all America hears her voice so they begin to wonder...wonder how we can ensure that all our veterans are welcomed home with dignity and gratitude they deserve.

As Memorial Day approaches, I would like to share with you a quote from President Clinton....

"On this Memorial Day, let us draw inspiration from the spirit that surrounds us,
to give those who still defend our freedom and security in the military today
the support they need and deserve to fulfill their important mission....

"May God bless the souls of our departed and always bless the country they gave everything to serve."

Thank you so much, cam on nhieu. Welcome Home!
