I flew with the 74th RAC from October 1967 to January 1968, and then with the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion in Bien Hoa.
We lost a few Birddog pilots at the 74th. It was too easy to get lulled asleep in that little plane.
One day, after I had landed at Phu Loi and was walking toward HQ, the crew chief called:
"Lieutenant, come here!!
I turned around, and walked back toward the plane.
"Look here," he said, pointing at the bullet hole in the empanage.
I had not heard, seen, or felt, a thing.
