My name is Doc Hartley I produly served with 1st bat 4th Marines Charlie, Bravo, & Delta companies Jan 1 thru Aug 7th 1966.
I too am looking for the surviors of "Cherry Charlie" company. You see, when C company lost it's cherry, it lost most of it's capability as a cohesive fighting unit, and was merged into Bravo & delta company's. I am trying to find a Red head Lcpl from Oregon, I think Bend, Oregon who saved my life and a few others. I told some spit and polished Colonal in strached fatigues, that he and another brother both need to be nominated for valor. They wanted to nominate me for the silver star. Anyway, I got saved right after again, by the death of my 8 year brother and got a free pass to go home on emergency leave. My new unit Bravo company & Delta from 1- 4 went back into the shit, up around Khsan. Saw it on TV while on leave. Holy crap that was a nightmare. Never got back to the Nam.
Need to reconcile some old wounds, and say many many thanks.

I was battalion chaplain with 2/5 from Sept 68 thru
May 69. One of the defining moments was operation Meade River. Serving with the Marine Infantry - and the best of the best, 2/5 - was a great priviledge and honor. Spent 21 days in the hospital with Malaria and shrapnel.

I Was assigned to Army MARS Station AB8AAI in Dong Ha from April 1969 to end of January 1970. MY job was connecting my (mostly) Army and Marine brothers with loved back in the world via Shortwave/Phone patches with ham operators throughut the States. I will always consider the greatest job I ever had!. Met a lot of great young men and women. Loved them all. Many are gone now. Way too early and too beautiful.

I served two tours, both in I Corps. First time in A Co, 2/5 Cav, 1st Air Cav Div; injured knee; went home early; assigned to 24th Div, Ft Riley, KS; had surgery; back in-country within 10 mos of leaving. Second tour began with 2 1/2 mos in MACV J-1 as rctg/induction advisor to ARVN in DaNang. Then with MACV Adv Tm 3 which served as advisors to the ARVN 1st Division with Hqs at the Citadel in Hue. Serving with the Vietnamese gave me a totally different perspective on the war; the Vietnamese were like us they loved their families, wanted peace, wanted better things for their families, etc.
I ret'd to VN in Jan '92 w/VWAM. It was very special in many ways. Some people on the trip were Bill Kimball, Roger Helle, Rev Bob Peragallo, Bill Baldwin, Les Walker (I want to find him), another guy w/wife (can't remember name, but he committed suicide shortly after returning). I try to pray daily for all who have served, are serving and will serve in our Nation's military and non-uniformed services. I would ask all who read this to pray for America (2 Chron 7:14; Phil 4:6). Oh, I am very blessed (even with Multiple Sclerosis, 3 knee replacements, survived a bad wreck)- have super wife (married 45 yrs on 12 Oct '07), 3 wonderful children and 3 wonderful grandchildren.
