I was in the US Army 1966-68, went in to fly helicopters. Washed out of fly't school at Ft Wolters, Tx. Went into Air Traffic Control school at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Got pulled out of school
(got a dear John from home) Then tranfered to Ft Rucker, Ala. I went into military pay, I also put in 3 1049's request for transfer to Viet Nam. My Comander told me he denied them because I was needed where I was at. I ETSed there from Rucker Jan. 1968. I have alway felt that a part of my destinity had been taken from me. I had many friends that went to the Nam, some never came home..............and it haunt's my soul even today!

My brother, Steven Gatrell enlisted at 17 and went to Viet Nam as a rifleman (366 TACTICAL FIGHTER WING, MARINES, DaNang & Tet offensive 1966-68). I was born while he was there. He just passed away, and I'm only now finding out about his life...he never spoke about Nam, I didn't have a clue of the impact it had on him until his VA counselor spoke at his funeral this month. I learned of a close friend he had named Steven Keith Brandenberg from Galveston IN. who died there. If anyone knows anything about my brother, Steven Gatrell, or his friend Corporal Steven Keith Brandenberg please email me at: [email protected].
I'm sorry I've been so slow to realize...for my brother and for all of you. I had no idea, and I know I still don't. He had PTSD and waited too long to get help, please learn from his mistake! I finally understand why he was hard to get close to, but its too late for us.
God bless you all. I have a whole new respect for the freedom I've always taken for granted. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My father went on three tours of duty to Da Nang, Vietnam. I decided to visit this site after doing a report for my class on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Our instructor asked us to interview a Veteran so I interviewed my Dad. I didn't know that so many people had died in this war and that death was everywhere. I just want to let all of you know that there are people that appreciate you and that God was definately with you to help you perservere through a war that really never ended for some people.

My dad was there during the war. He was born there & its interesting to see other stories and such. I have been just about everywhere there when i went over there. It is a very cool plaace & people think that the vietnameese are bad people still even though most of the fighters there aren't alive or moved somewhere else.
