I flew an AP-2H (USN VAH-21) in support of a downed EF-100 that experienced an unknown mechanical problem, the pilot ejected, the plane made a pancake landing and was not destroyed. The plane contained top secret gear and I flew a night mission over said aircraft to keep the VC or RNV troops from capturing the pilot or to extract sensitive gear on the EF-100. I was armed with (8) 40 MM grenade launchers, two mini guns, four napalm(MK77), four 250# bombs(MK81) and two 500#bombs(MK82), (2) M-60;s and a twin 20MM tail turret. The mission was flown in late May 1969. I expended most of my available ammunition during the mission.
A few weeks later, my squadron (VAH-21) received a top secret message thanking us for flying cover while disposing of at least 28 enemy and a greater number of seriously wounded enemy soldiers plus many blood trails (I do not recall the exact numbers of KIA or WIA). The pilot was rescued and the aircraft was airlifted out for recovery.
My squadron was in the process of being disestablished and being sent back to the States. Consequently: there were no awards put in for. I would like to recover a copy of the top secret message for my own self gratification and to show my kids.

I ran across this from Michael Garvin when I was looking for EdSnellenberger:
"I was with the 58th Field Depot and 96th DPU in Qui Nhon Vietnam 1966-1967. I am looking for Steve Plake, Steve Pagnano, Major Covington, and Scott Zimmerman. I have made contact with Kingsley Smith, Harold Funke, George Szeman, Andre Johnson, Ed Estabrook, Richard Freiday, and Ed Snellenberger."
I was with Hq Co 58th Field Depot from December 1966 through September 1968. Ed Snellenberger was the Company Clerk and I worked in
SP&O and my last job there was Training NCO. I remember Andre Johnson and vaguely recall Kingsley Smith. I came back to VN in October 1968 and stayed until February 1971 as an Air Fright Terminal Manager for Columbia Export Packers, Inc. and then lived in Korea for about 6 months.
