I was in security in the Air Force Security Police at Bien Thuy Air Base near Can Tho. I was there during the Tet offensive. Unlike many vets, I have fond memories of the period. It is hard to believe it has been 45 years. I did drink to excess and loved visiting the prostitutes and worked the black market small time but enough to always have money to party. During my first three months or so, I lived downtown in a hotel the Air Force had contracted because their was not sufficient housing on base. It was supposed to only be for weeks but I never complained and lived there for months. I was often scared but thought it an adventure. I was young and foolish. Tet was bad with numerous bombardments and small arms fire but except for about six weeks we were not restricted to base. I loved the local food and people. I tried to experience as much as I could given the war status.

I was with the 27th maint bn. in 1969 thru 1970. I operated a 10-ton wrecker with "Toni" written on the boom. I have a photo with the entire detachment in black and white. As much as I have tried, I can`t put a name on any of the faces. I do remember an Italian Sgt. whose last name started with "Z". Zammoran, Zammoria; something like that. He confided in me that he and his wife had made up a plan so the Army could give him a leave. She started sending him letters that she was having an affair, which were all lies. Anyway, he was granted a leave. Another incident that I remember was that one of the guys was found dead in his hootch from drug usage. If any body remembers any of this, please contact me.
