Someone is under a misapprehension about Hawk Hill being "over-run" by NVA sappers in Aug 1969. I WAS THERE AND IT NEVER HAPPENED! The night of 11/12 Aug 1969 sappers breached the wire.
C Troop 1/1 Cav was on the perimeter, gave the alert and fought like hell before driving the sappers out. Eight Troopers were KIA. The sappers lost many of their number KIA. First time I saw "bodies hanging in the wire". The Cav had some M-48's and M-114's (ACAV's) O/A mostly to RPG's.An Arty Battery had a few guns O/A, again mostly to RPG's.

VETERANS 1970, CAMP RATCLIFF, ANH KHE, VIETNAM

If you served in Vietnam in 1970, and were stationed at Camp Ratcliff, Anh Khe, the night 16 helicopters and 1 hooch full of GI's were blown up, please contact [email protected]

A freelance private investigation is getting under way to find out how and why the V.C. got inside the camp, and then out again so easily and undetected. If you remember, the aerial flares (pop up canister type) were removed from the guard towers and bunkers all around the perimeter just a few days before the attack; and the searchlight on top of Hong Kong Mountain wasn't used for some mysterious reason that deadly night.

It's only speculation at this time but there are 2 distinct scenarios that fit one eye witness's account of that night in Anh Khe:

(1.) The chain of command could have had previous knowledge of the pending attack and allowed it to take place in order to gain support for a Tet Offensive buildup.

(2.) The chain of command were taken by surprise by the attack and blotched it so badly that it was necessary to conceal their blunder by falsifying reports and by discharging GIs who apparently knew too much.

If you received an early out of Vietnam, under AR-212 around that time, your testimony is pertinent to this investigation. You may have information that exposes a cover up committed by the US. Army.

I was the one who found the location where the V.C. exited the wire and left the perimeter of the camp; to my knowledge, no V.C. kills were reported. I was soon 212ed out of the service for having a behavioral disorder (active/aggressive personality disorder). However, up until the time of the Anh Khe attack I had no prior mental health issues.

Rodney Lee Mitchell Jr. - code named: Tripper, 124th Signal Battalion. Co. C.

**** In 1974 there was a mysterious fire that destroyed all the military records of Vietnam and those who served there.

Over 400,000 veterans who received "less than honorable" discharges between 1964 and 1973, may be eligible to have them upgraded to Honorable. Even on an Honorable discharge, a "Spin Code" (SPN - Separation Program Number) can hurt a veteran's chance of being hired by a prospective employer. These spin codes were put on DD 214 (discharge papers) from the 1940's through the early 1970's. Veterans can request a new DD 214 with the spin codes removed (e.g. AR-635-212 SPN 264).

I found this site while pursuing references from Patriot Post, starting with the remarkable story of Roger Helle, (PatriotPost-071109--Veterans Day Profile; Point Man, Roger Helle), which led to this site: Vets with a Mission.

All these stories are truly remarkable, and I just wanted to register my thanks to all that served in Vietnam and all wars, and to offer a prayer that all those involved continue with this site continue to be blessed to do God's work of healing and helping others find their path through life. Indeed worthwhile.

40 years have come and gone, in a blink, since 1968. Having stumbled on this site, I sit safely in front of my computer, once again wired tight by the info I have read here. On January 31, 1968 I was stationed with the 25th Inf. Div. at a forward base north of Cu Chi, at a place called Dau Tieng. From then until I left Vietnam in mid-July, the non-stop attacks never let up, contrary to what most people believe (that Tet only lasted a couple weeks or maybe a month). Little do they know. OK, that's it from me for today...I'll go back to being normal, low-key Rob for another year or two. Glad these new vets are treated differently.

I am trying to find anyone out there, that might remember my brother, David W. Roach. He was in Vietnam 1967/68 at Pleiku. He is trying to find someone that might be able to help him with his stressors. He can't remember names of the guys over there with him and not really to much of things that happened. He however does remember a mess hall being hit and people getting killed. He also remembered a PX being hit and some others getting killed too. David is from Mississippi. I know there is alot of guys in the same boat that he is in. It has been so many years and he just can't remember. If someone knows of these things happening or remembers him by chance, I we would appreciate your help..
Thank you all for service also..
Thanks,
Patricia Graham
